Sittwe: UNICEF set up a tent school for children in Thaychaung Village in Sittwe, the capital of western Burma's Arakan State, last Wednesday, a week after the village primary school was damaged by a powerful tornado. A school teacher, however, said that most of the children were unable to come back to their classes as their already poor lives had been worsened by the tornado.
"Most of my students have now dropped out of school because they have lost everything - their houses as well as stationary and textbooks - to the destructive tornado. They are very poor and the disaster has worsened their lives. As their parents are also relying on them to help rehabilitate their families, they have no opportunity to come to school," said the teacher.
According to the villagers, one man was killed and several others were injured, and more than 30 houses and the primary school were damaged when the tornado hit their village in the early morning on 14 June, 2010. The victims are still in need of aid, particularly for rebuilding their homes that were destroyed.
UNICEF is the first to provide the tent school in the village in place of the only primary school, which was destroyed in the disaster.
According to local sources, more than 50 other schools in Ponna Kyunt, Kyauktaw, Minbya, Rathidaung, Buthidaung, and Maungdaw Township in Arakan State were also damaged by recent flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains.
